At the Edge of Light and Darkness - The personal journey is an essential aspect of human existence, serving as a means of self-discovery and growth. Joseph Campbell, the renowned mythologist, introduced the concept of "the hero's journey," which identifies a universal narrative structure that transcends cultural boundaries. In this archetypal narrative, a hero embarks on an adventure, faces challenges and trials, ultimately undergoing transformation and returning home with newfound wisdom and insight. This framework mirrors the significance of personal journeys in our lives, as we too embark on our individual quests for meaning, purpose, and self-realization. 

 When embarking on our personal journeys, we navigate the intricate landscapes of our own psyches, confronting our inner dragons, and forging paths through unchartered territories. Just as the hero's journey is marked by pivotal moments of growth and self-discovery, our personal journeys are defined by experiences that challenge us to evolve, learn, and ultimately become the heroes of our own stories. Primary Producerware, Tableware: Magnifies the ancient basis of our ecosystem sustaining all life

Science:
The ocean's mighty microscopic marine organisms help photosynthesize over 50% of earth's oxygen alone, providing every other breath we breathe. Diatoms alone produce over 25% of our planet's oxygen from salt and fresh water to moisture in the soil. These primary producers are some of the earliest life on earth. Drawings include the marine micro organisms to glass sea sponges, anemones, coral and inspirations from the sea.

Diatom interdependence:
Being a ceramicist offers an intimate connection for the brick of my kiln is made from the remains of diatoms over millions of years old gathered from the ocean floor as diatomaceous earth. The silica structure of the diatom is the same material in my glazes and clay body particulates. This single-cell organism not only generously provides oxygen for our planet, it makes this ceramicist's artistic breath and process possible.

Lamella Love was inspired by fungi lamella/gill engineering of the Chocolate Milky, Lactarius lignyotus. This resourceful fungi exudes latex droplets as a defense mechanism to ward off predators. Sometimes a girl has to create a shield to protect what she loves. This mycorrhizal fungi is an example of one of the earliest alliances on planet Earth. 90% of all plants rely on mycorrhizal relationships, a partnership of fungi with different plant species. They collaborate yet remain recognizable as themselves. The plants can have many different fungi/mycelium (fiber optic-like roots) connectors. 500 million years ago it was mycorrhizal fungi that enabled algae to transplant from sea to land supporting our first terrestrial plants. 

I will always love you, regardless of species.

It’s clearly time that we got the memo on mutualism, the indelible interdependence between diverse species. We are in this together.

So pleased to contribute 2 works: Diatom Yunomi and Yin Yang Yunomi for parallel exhibits at No. 5 Butchie Alley and Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia.

A “yunomi” is a handle-less Japanese teacup used for daily tea drinking. The tradition of making Yunomi has evolved since its conception in the 16th century and contemporary artists have expanded on the variety of styles and shapes, departing from the traditional footed, cylindrical style. 

Artist/Curator Terri Saulin sent out invitations to a select group of artists during Pride 2023 to honor our LGBTQA+ family/friends. Using “Meoto Yunomi '' as a vehicle to challenge heteronormative power dynamics, artists were asked to create two cups that absolutely have to be together…. or individual.

I created interdependent sculptural sips intended as One while non-binary individuals.

Origin: magnify, Late Middle English, ‘show honor to’ and ‘make greater’ and from Latin magnificare, based on magnus, ‘great’. Magnify dates from the mid 17th c.

Magnificare sheds light on a multiplex of senses and dimensions from the eye, mind and heart to sustainable actions. Each series in the exhibition honors and celebrates mutually thriving communities and environments. Hagan’s play with scale makes physically visible the micro jewels of the ocean and her tributaries. In a cohesive and diverse body of ceramics, the works illuminate interdependence and engagement while magnifying our awareness, reciprocal responsibility, and protection of each other and our planet.

Talks will being with Eileen Neff, curator of the faculty exhibit running parallel with No Synthetic Colors. I will be sharing the visual voice of my sculptures in the exhibit along with Jennifer Baker and Joshua Schaefer.

Thrilled to have 3 works in this exhibit curated by Hallie Ringle, the Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania.

The works in this year's PAFA Alumni exhibition resist easy categorization. In "No Synthetic Colors" the themes are as varied as the objects, from ecological concerns to technology.Instead, the pieces are united by a commitment to rigor and innovative thinking, the same qualities that define PAFA's program. From a pea, to a sock puppet, to a scroll, the works are sharp. Some works are witty, some touch upon poignant narratives, while others deliberately embrace ambiguity. Collectively, these objects form a clear picture of the critical work that happens here at PAFA, which, in turn, helps to shape the state of contemporary art.

When the world gets too weird to comprehend, art and design of the moment reflect that. Weirdness is becoming the new norm. In light of forced detachment from pre-COVID lives, HOT BED has gathered the latest perspectives on the new and unfamiliar. WACK! invites artists and viewers to lean into the absurdity of our present moment. The 24 artists in this exhibition fearlessly embrace how “wack” life in Philly has become and show us what wonderful things this weirdness creates.

I am honored to have my diatom sculpture, Flourish, part of the 81st Annual. This year’s juror, Doug Bucci, invited artists to submit work that explores novel and infinite ideas and methods of connection.

Fifty-four artists working in sculpture, painting, photography, jewelry, and printmaking address such varied subjects as climate change, materialism, ancestry, and biology, revealing connections on a microscopic to universal level. The spectrum of ideas and processes, including innovative uses of electroforming, computer-aided design, and 3-D printing, illustrates the intellectual rigor and creative diversity that characterize our city’s art community. Pleased to be invited to this annual exhibit curated by Jennifer Zwilling at The Clay Studio. to visit and shop the online exhibit. I created Veiled Lady, Petit Fungi Shield for the exhibit as well as my two Petit Pit-Fired Rongorongos: Flying Fish and Rongorongo Dance.

Small Favors 2023 is the 17th anniversary of this beloved exhibition. It will be on view at The Clay Studio’s new building for the first time with their first anniversary at 1425 N American Street in April. Among almost 400 small artworks displayed in 4-inch cubes you will find big ideas, individuality, and material awareness. To celebrate that this truly is an exhibition for everyone, a few years ago, Small Favors included artists working in different materials. This year we are excited to have art in wood, metal, glass, fiber, paper, and paint. The majority of the works are examples of small ceramic artworks that range from tiny mugs to intricate sculptures. 

Artists represented in Small Favors range from the most established ceramic artists in the field, to young artists new to the field. Small Favors engages artists' creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a very small scale. There is an open call each year for juried work, as well as a group of invited artists who participate. This year hosts artworks from Japan, China and Budapest in addition to those from around the United States. 

Small Favors offers work in a broad price range from $35 to $3,500 and encourages people to become collectors while offering efficiency of space for established collectors. Click link below to visit and shop the online exhibit.

The Work of Art: Museum Collecting Unpacked shares the stories of approximately 25 carefully selected objects from the Michener’s permanent and archival collections to explore the life cycle of a work of art, from its creation to museum acquisition. Including collection favorites and many recent acquisitions that have never been on view, the exhibited works illustrate the museum’s dedication to the diverse artistic community and history of the Delaware River Valley and offer insight into ongoing conversations about the future of museum collecting.

About this Event

On Saturday, April 24th, gallery and creative lifestyle space, HOT•BED, will be hosting an exciting collaboration and public event with the regional distributors of Pedego Electric Bikes. From 1–6pm, gallery visitors (723 Chestnut St Floor 2) are invited to take Pedego’s innovative e-bikes for a spin.

This event is in conjunction with HOT•BED’s ongoing exhibition, Biospheres, which aims to inspire a vision of a future biodiverse Earth. Featuring work by Marguerita Hagan and Ana Vizcarra Rankin, Biospheres reminds us that we have a communal responsibility to our environment and must take action now. Electric bikes are zero emission vehicles that won't contribute CO2 to the atmosphere, producing zero air pollution. In fact, using e-bikes can prevent an estimated 500 pounds of carbon emissions from being released into the environment.

HOT•BED is thrilled to team up with Pedego for this event and to help encourage a brighter future and a healthier atmosphere, while increasing the bike rider’s fun factor. Pedego encourages people who never thought they’d ride a bike again to increase their health through exercise. Riding bikes is fun again!

The event will include a gallery reception 6-8pm, with Q&A from gallery owner Bryan Hoffman and owner/president of Pedego Richard Bastian at 7pm. Space is limited and riders must be 16+.

Small Favors engages artist's creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a very small scale. For some artists, the work they create is similar to what they normally make, but at a reduced scale. Others use it as an opportunity to break away from what they create in their daily studio practice. The works exhibited are incredibly varied in material, form, and aesthetics.
